Starting a session

I am unable to open PAPERSHOW.

When you insert the PAPERSHOW key in the USB port on your PC, a "mixed content" window is displayed suggesting you launch PAPERSHOW.

If this window does not appear, go to the Desktop and double-click on the PAPERSHOW icon. Do not try to explore the key to find the PAPERSHOW application.

I am unable to import my POWERPOINT® document

1. A dialogue box tells you that the POWERPOINT application is not closed.
If PowerPoint is open, close the application.
If PowerPoint is closed, check in the task list of that the "POWERPNT.exe" server for the application is there. If it is there, you must terminate the task.
To access the task list, press simultaneously on the Alt+Ctrl+Del keys on your keyboard. Select the button Task Manager. Click on the tab Process. Select "POWERPNT.exe" and click on le button Terminate the Process.

2.Check that the POWERPOINT presentation you want to import does not contain slides in Portrait mode. This mode is not compatible with printing on the PAPERSHOW paper.

3.Check that the version of the POWERPOINT documentis compatible with the version of the POWERPOINT application installed on your computer. In general, if someone sends you a presentation, ask for the PowerPoint 97-2003 format. général, si l’on vous transmet une présentation, demandez le format PowerPoint 97-2003.

N.B.: If someone sends you a PowerPoint 2007 file for importing into PAPERSHOW on a computer with POWERPOINT 2003 installed with its conversion module; the import function will not work. The .pptx file must first be saved in the PowerPoint 2003 format.

4. If you have not updated your PAPERSHOW key with a 1.2 version or later, check that your POWERPOINT presentation does not include hidden slides.
Find the version of the PAPERSHOW application in the Preferences menu then About …

I am unable to display my notes on the screen

1. Check that you are in fact using the right PAPERSHOW paper type to display your notes.

a. If you are in "Whiteboard" mode, you must use one of the two PAPERSHOW notepads.
b. If you are in "Annotation of slide presentations or pictures", you must use the PAPERSHOW sheets for printing.

N.B.: If you write on the wrong type of paper, a dialogue box will appear and tell you that "you have written on the wrong page".

2. In the case of annotating a slide presentation or a picture, check that you have printed on the PAPERSHOW sheets with the command "Print on PAPERSHOW paper". The printing is automatically in blue gradation: no other colour is accepted.

3. If you are more than 6 metres away from the PAPERSHOW key, you may have lost the Bluetooth® connection. Come close to the key, replace the pen's cap again and then remove it to reactivate the connection.

4. Check that the battery is not flat. If the led on the pen blinks rapidly, that means that the battery is very weak. If the led is not lighted at all, that means that the battery is flat.

I systematically lose strokes whenever I write after removing the cap.

When you remote the cap, the pen immediately tries to make a Bluetooth® connection with the PC via the key. The time taken for this connection is variable depending on the computers. If you write while the connection has not yet been established, you run the risk of losing the first strokes.

Advice: wait until the connection is established before starting to write. A sound and visual signal will enable you to check (the little icon at the bottom left of your screen turns green).

A tooltip tells me that I have not written on the right paper.

There are 2 PAPERSHOW paper type:
a. The PAPERSHOW or PAPERSHOW FOR TEACHERS notepads/notebooks, for your whiteboard applications.
b. The PAPERSHOW or PAPERSHOW FOR TEACHERS A4 printer paper, to annotate a PowerPoint/PDF file or images.

If you write on a paper type that the PAPERSHOW application does not expect, a tooltip tells you that you have made a mistake: "You have written on the wrong page!".

There is a difference between the paper and screen layout.

2 possible explanations:

1.Your printer's tray may have moved during printing. You need to re-calibrate the writing zone.
Put the pen on the calibrating icon in the left-hand margin (target).
A message will pop up at the top of your screen, indicating the next step: "Put the tip of the pen in the centre of the red cross printed on the top left corner of the writing zone...", and then "Put the tip of the pen in the centre of the red cross printed on the bottom left corner of the writing zone."

Hint: this can be done at any time, even when a session is open.

2. Your paper print-out does not entirely match the file on the screen. You may have printed a Papershow file and then re-imported the PowerPoint presentation or image into Papershow.
The calibrating procedure will not suffice.
You need to print the latest version of the Papershow file to be projected on the screen.

Papershow functions

How to insert bullet points in my presentation?

To organise your notes, you can easily insert bullet points (same sized perfect shapes) thanks to the Papershow paper tool bar.

In practical terms, to insert a bullet point (at the beginning of the line for example), put the pen on one of the perfect shapes in the tool bar (for example a circle), and draw a simple point in the writing zone, where you want it to appear. A fixed sized circle then appears then on screen.

To insert a second bullet point, you have to reselect the shape and draw a simple point under the first one.

Each perfect shape enables you to create a potential bullet point: empty or full rectangle, empty or full circle, thin or thick stroke, thin or thick arrowhead. Rem: If the perfect shape drawn measures less than 3mm, Papershow shows a fixed size shape (2-3mm depending on the shape selected).

I am unable to delete a page.

1. You are trying to delete the first page of your "Whiteboard" session. This first page cannot be deleted: a PAPERSHOW document must contain at least one page.

2.You are trying to delete a page from your slide presentation. You cannot delete pages from your imported slide presentation. You can only delete the pages that you have added by using the toolbar.

I am unable to launch a video/music.

1.Check that the slide displayed on the screen is really the one that contains the video or the music.

2.Check that your video or your original music is in a compatible format (Windows Media Player) for importing in to PAPERSHOW:

a. Video format: wmv file
b. Audio format: wma file

3. When you insert a video or audio file into your original document, make sure that you use the Insertion command then Films and/or Sound in the PowerPoint application.

I am unable to send my document by e-mail.

Check that your computer has an e-mail system and that it is compatible with MAPI (the case in general).

If you are using Lotus Notes, your e-mail application must be already open before launching the "send by e-mail" command in PAPERSHOW.

I am unable to draw nice perfect shapes (squares, circles, arrows, straight ones).

You must draw the shape in one stroke. Once you lift the pen, the perfect shape mode is no longer active. PAPERSHOW displays the shape which corresponds to your handwritten stroke.

Some functions in the main menu always remain dimmed.

The dimmed functions are not accessible depending on whether you are in a session or a closed session. To access the dimmed functions, close the current session or, on the contrary, open a session.

My notes don't appear on screen immediately.

3 possible explanations:

1.Your pen's battery may be low. If this is the case, the LED on your pen flashes twice per second. You just need to change the battery for your notes to show up immediately on the screen.

2. You may be too far from the key (> 8 metres). The Bluetooth® connection is weak. Move the pen to the correct distance to improve connection.

Note: the further you are from the key, the slower the display time will be.

3. The connection may be disturbed by the presence of other Bluetooth® transmitters (e.g.: mobile telephones, Smartphone, PCs, etc.)

Is it possible to open an interactive presentation and a white board at the same time?

It is not possible to open 2 Papershow sessions at the same time in the application (white board session + interactive presentation for example).

However, to "simulate" the White board function at the same time as writing notes on an interactive presentation, you can insert a blank page. To do this:

- Display the slide after which you want to insert the blank page (between 2 slides or at the end of your presentation, for example)
- Add a page using the pen and the Blank page tool
- Get a blank page ready to print
- Use this page as a white board on which to insert notes.

Is it possible to use several pens/participants on one presentation at the same time?

No, one pen is associated with one key/application.  For several people to add to the same presentation, just pass round the pen and the paper.

Compatibility

Is PAPERSHOW Mac compatible?

A new PAPERSHOW kit, compatible with PC and MAC, will be on the market from June 2010.

Is PAPERSHOW compatible with Windows 7

The PAPERSHOW software is compatible with Windows 7. To install PAPERSHOW version for Win7 on your USB key, please follow the procedure on our support website www.papershow.org

Is PAPERSHOW running on 64-bit computer?

The PAPERSHOW software now works on a 64-bits computer. To install the 64-bits version on your PAPERSHOW key, you just need to download the last upgrade.

Maintenance

How to change the pen's nib?

Only use Papershow ink refills. These have been specifically designed for the Papershow pen with special black ink. To change the pen's nib:
1. Put the end of the nib in the hole on the lid's clip, above the Papershow logo.
2. Tilt the pen downwards to block the nib.
3. Gently pull on the pen to remove the nib.
4. Put a new nib in the pen and use the clip's hole to push the nib in deeply, without forcing.

How to update the Papershow software?

Two methods are possible, using the USB key:

1. Connect to Internet. Plug the USB key into the USB port on your PC and open the Papershow application. Click the Preferences menu on the top right and choose the command "WebUpgrade". A Papershow "WebUpgrade" window opens. Click "Install" to download (via the Internet site) the latest available version.

2. Without opening the application, explore directly the Papershow key and click on the WebUpgrade icon to run the automatic update. You need to be connected to Internet.

Note: If the "Install" button is not accessible, this is because you do not need to update your key.

Printing

Why is my presentation printed out in shades of blue?

Papershow has 2 types of printing: "Print on Papershow paper" and "Print".

1. Use the "Print on Papershow paper" command in the main menu to print your imported pictures or presentations on Papershow paper in order to write notes on them.

The application automatically configures printing in A4 draft mode in shades of blue. Colour printing, including black, would affect the reading of your pen.

2. Use the "Print" command to print your presentations with notes, in colour on standard paper. You will not be able to add notes to presentations or images.

Note: Use a colour laser or inkjet printer for your Papershow printing.

Others

There's a problem with the battery

The battery's life span depends on its quality. Only use AAA alkaline batteries (rechargeable if desired)

There are several indicators telling you when you need to change the battery:

1. A text message appears at the top of your screen: "Battery low"

2. The pen's green LED flashes twice per second, on an ongoing basis.

To change the battery, open the battery compartment at the back of the pen, remove the lid and replace with a AAA alkaline battery (be careful to put the battery in the right way)
